OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Doesn’t feel like summer should be over yet, but today was the first day of school here in Atlanta, and a big day in our house since Lucas is off to Kindergarten! We are having a really hard time believing he’s already old enough to get on the bus and go to school all day, but he loved it and can’t wait to go back tomorrow. Here are some photo highlights.

Walking to the bus stop, excited about the new McQueen backpack with matching lunchbox.

Like tons of other parents, we jumped in the car as soon as he was on the bus and rushed over to meet the bus at the front of the school. They had the school mascot out to meet the bus as well. There was an email sent out to parents a couple of weeks ago asking for a volunteer to wear the mascot suit on day 1….next year Thomaz will have to do it!  And Stella had fun seeing one of her BFFs Kaya, whose big sis is starting kindergarten too.

Things got down to business once we got to the classroom, figuring out where to put the bag, finding a seat. He did great!

He got off the bus at the end of the day and had nothing but great things to say about kindergarten!

We’ve had a couple of beautiful fall weekends here in Atlanta!  This time of year our park across the street is just so pretty.  Here’s a video from a couple weeks ago (pw=pitanga)

And this was yesterday, in the backyard, covered in leaves, we filled 2 bags worth and didn’t even make a dent.

Then later in the evening Thomaz built a fire pit out of old patio stones, and we had hot cocoa and built a fire.  Was all very exciting!  (video pw=pitanga)

Plants that Make Food

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

With our new an improved backyard, we decided to try our hand at planting some things this year. And when we started talking about what flowers we wanted to get, Lucas declared that we should get “plants that make food”   And so be it.  We spent a weekend about a month ago, planting a garden.  I don’t have any after pics here yet, but we’ve already started eating the lettuce from the garden, and the tomatoes and squash are growing strong, we’re excited!

Saturday morning we started with a shopping trip to get all of the stuff, and then a snack before getting started.

And Lucas loved helping daddy build the veggie garden boxes.

A break for picnic lunch, and some b-ball.

And the finished product!  We found a nice spot, way in the back of our yard, where there’s a fence to keep the dogs from sampling the goods.

New Backyard

Sunday, October 14th, 2012

Not so new anymore, since we finished the project in August, but finally here are some photos of our latest house project….the backyard!  Anyone who has been to our house can attest that our backyard was a complete jungle with a lot of potential.  I like to say that it resembled what that Discovery show “Life after people” brings to mind.  But we have finally conquered the backyard and turned it into some fun usable space for the fam.

Here are some before pics (which look so bad that I’m reluctant to even post them…but here you go, for posterity, this is the sad state of affairs we were in)

Some pics during the action. Which should have only taken about a week, but because of permit issues, took about 3 weeks.

And the after pics…we are so excited to have a space that we can just open the door and let the kids run around back there.  We’ve already forgotten what we did before!

Finally, a grand tour…

New Kitchen

Saturday, October 16th, 2010

After many months, our new kitchen remodel is finally done! Well, it was completed weeks ago, but only recently we were able to clean up the place and finally get rid of old appliances.

We documented the whole process with photos and videos. So, to make it fun, let’s start with how things used to be, take a look at some in-between photos and then watch an “after” video. Shall we?

Ok, here’s the kitchen we had before the renovation:

And construction began. Well, I guess I should say demolition began. But that took only a few days. Not too long after that the construction crew was already reinforcing the structure of the kitchen:

Many weeks later, and walls are back up, but there’s still a lot of work to do. Even the new floor hadn’t been laid out at this point yet:

Walls, floor done. Time for cabinets and appliances:

Nursery

Monday, August 10th, 2009

We have few old drafts of posts lying around, that I’ve been meaning to finish up, so I’m going to get some of these posted before getting on to newer things…

Since Lucas was a month early, he caught us by surprise in terms of having his room ready. For the first few weeks he was in our room anyway, but now he’s officially got his own digs.

Here are some recent photos.

Grandpa Clark did a great job putting up shelves in the closet, now it is soooo much more useful.

And I got a little crafty with the wall decor, with some help from Grandma Jan we made some fun little chairs for bears to hang out on the wall.

Basement

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009

We finished our basement project (our first major home improvement) right before Lucas’ arrival. It was about a month of people coming to work on the basement almost everyday, and it was pretty exciting to see the transformation.

It’s been a little hard to describe our basement project to people, because we didn’t exactly “finish” the basement but really just brought it up to what most people would call an unfinished basement. So, I guess we “unfinished” our basement?

Anyway, check out the before and after videos, and you’ll see what I mean!  Password = pitanga

Grass

Saturday, May 23rd, 2009

In a departure from “all things Lucas,” a quick post about my (Andrea’s) recent landscaping experiment.

For anyone who has seen our backyard, it is a great space that is completely overrun with brush and has no real rhyme or reason to it.  We have big visions of fixing it up one day, I think that project is in line right after the basement and kitchen, so still several years away.

Much of the backyard is large swaths of dirt like this…

grass1

So, about a month ago, I decided to buy a $10 bag of grass seed, spread it around, and see what happens.  Thomaz was very skeptical, but decided to humor me and we proceeded with the seeding of this little space behind our house as an experiment in growing grass.

Low and behold!  Only a few days later we had signs of life

grass2

And here’s the current state of my grass today.  I’ll admit it’s a little patchy 🙂  But I have hope that it will fill in nicely, and if not I’m certain I could just throw down a few more seeds and we’d be good to go.

When The Ceiling Falls Down

Saturday, February 28th, 2009

A couple of weeks ago I was working in the office when I heard a huge noise coming from the kitchen. I turned around, looked at the kitchen and saw the dogs darting outside with a scary look in their faces.

Oh, oh, I thought. Maybe they just brought down the trash bin, which wouldn’t be a big surprise, and were scared by the noise the bin made when it hit the ground.

I was so wrong. I walked into the kitchen and this is what I saw:

ceiling-1.jpg

Part of the ceiling in the kitchen came down! As it turns out, we had a leak in the bathroom upstairs and the water accumulated in the sheetrock, making it gain a lot of weight. Eventually, the nails couldn’t hold it any longer.

We called some people right away and in a matter of days, part of our kitchen was a construction zone:

ceiling-2.jpg

ceiling-3.jpg

A couple of new pipes and sheetrock boards later, I am happy to report we are back in business. Definitely not something we were expecting, but that’s part of the thrill of owning an old home – anything can happen!

lawn-thomaz.JPG

We finally conquered the weeds last weekend! We decided that rather than go for the gold, and try to have a real grass lawn, for now we’ll settle for a nicely manicured weed lawn. After deducing that the old lawn mower we found in the shed was left there for a reason, we headed off and purchased our first lawn mower. Another sign that we are real home owners now. I tried to get some before and after photos, as you can see, it’s a major improvement.

And our neighbor totally laughed at us taking these photos… 🙂
