When The Ceiling Falls Down

Saturday, February 28th, 2009

A couple of weeks ago I was working in the office when I heard a huge noise coming from the kitchen. I turned around, looked at the kitchen and saw the dogs darting outside with a scary look in their faces.

Oh, oh, I thought. Maybe they just brought down the trash bin, which wouldn’t be a big surprise, and were scared by the noise the bin made when it hit the ground.

I was so wrong. I walked into the kitchen and this is what I saw:

Part of the ceiling in the kitchen came down! As it turns out, we had a leak in the bathroom upstairs and the water accumulated in the sheetrock, making it gain a lot of weight. Eventually, the nails couldn’t hold it any longer.

We called some people right away and in a matter of days, part of our kitchen was a construction zone:

A couple of new pipes and sheetrock boards later, I am happy to report we are back in business. Definitely not something we were expecting, but that’s part of the thrill of owning an old home – anything can happen!

Frozen Bones

Friday, February 6th, 2009

January was a cold month here in Atlanta, sometimes down to 15F. Throughout 2008, we always kept the water bowl for the dogs outside. Problem is, when it’s below freezing, you end up with a big block of ice instead of water as we discovered one day when we woke up.

It was so cold that we thought Mario needed a sweater. They didn’t have it for boys, so I picked up the pink one, figuring that Mario would never find out.

Well, Mario hated the sweater – he was trying to eat it the whole time he had it on – so we decided to take it back.
